Lunch & Learn - Literally Washed Away

  • Hampton Inn & Suites 1252 U.S. 421 Boone, NC, 28607 United States (map)

This event is hosted by the Boone Chamber of Commerce. For more information and tickets, visit their website.

The August 1940 Flood claimed the lives of sixteen people in Watauga County and destroyed dozens of homes. It's also perhaps most famous for permanently ending train service to Boone. But why was the 1940 Flood so devastating, even in Downtown Boone? And what lessons can we still learn from this tragic event?

Dr. Eric Plaag, Chairperson of the Digital Watauga Project and a local historian, offers his view and takes your questions at our Lunch & Learn event.

Dr. Eric Plaag is the principal consultant at Carolina Historical Consulting, LLC, and also serves as Chairperson of the Boone Historic Preservation Commission and as the Chairperson of the Digital Watauga Project. He earned his doctorate in American History with a specialization in Historic Preservation at the University of South Carolina in 2006. He has been instrumental in a number of preservation efforts throughout the Carolinas in general and Watauga County in particular. He has lived in Boone since 2011.

This event is sponsored by the Town of Boone.
